Weekend Whistles and Racecourse Wonders: My Security Shift at Fontwell Park, Chichester
When you think of weekend getaways, security duty may not top the list. But this past weekend, I found myself at Fontwell Park Racecourse in Chichester, and what started as a routine assignment turned into an unexpected adventure full of stunning sights, heart-pounding horse races, and classic British charm
A Hidden Gem in West Sussex
Tucked between the South Downs and the seaside town of Bognor Regis, Fontwell Park isn’t just a racetrack — it's a community gathering ground where elegance meets adrenaline. As the gates opened early Saturday morning, you could feel the anticipation in the air — ladies in fascinators, gentlemen in tweed, and kids giggling with candy floss in hand.
While there for a security shift, the energy around me was electric. Positioned at the main entrance and occasionally rotating near the paddock, I got a unique front-row view of not just the crowd, but the culture.
Racing, Roars & Revelations
From the thunder of hooves pounding down the turf to the cheers erupting with each photo finish, the racing scene at Fontwell is exhilarating. I may have been wearing a high-vis vest instead of a betting slip in hand, but I felt every ounce of excitement.
Tip for visitors: Whether you’re here for the races or the local food trucks, arrive early and catch the pre-race paddock parades — it's the best time to see the horses and chat with the jockeys (yes, even we on-duty staff sneak a look!).
Behind the Scenes: Local Flavours & Laughs
Lunch break? Don’t expect a boring sandwich. The grounds are dotted with vendors offering everything from gourmet burgers to authentic fish & chips. One of the highlights was grabbing a hot cider and watching the sunset over the grandstand — pure cinematic magic.
Travel Tip: Try the handmade sausage rolls from “Racecourse Bakes” and thank me later.

Final Thoughts 💬
Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences aren’t the ones you plan — they’re the ones you live through while working. My Fontwell Park weekend reminded me that every location has a story, even if you’re standing guard instead of standing in line.
So whether you're in Chichester for the thrill of the race or just passing through on duty like me, take a moment to breathe in the countryside, connect with the crowd, and maybe — just maybe — bet on a dark horse.
